Hello, my name is Kamil. I am a student of the third class of biology-chemistry. I am interested in music, volleyball, and of course biology. Sometimes I draw or go running. This year I decided to take part in the biological competition. I had to write a research paper to take part in this contest. My inspiration for choosing a topic of studies was an article on American students’ studies about the influence of music on the growth of plants. I wanted to find out if my results would be similar to those found in America.
One beautiful day at the beginning of summer I planted some tomatoes. After a week I put them to small pots. The most important face of this experiment started. After bringing plants to school I put them into three classes. The first group of tomatoes listened to hard rock (Acid Drinkers); the second group was the control group and grew in silence, and the third group was stimulated by the songs of classical music (Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Spring). Besides this all the conditions were identical; temperature, lighting, mineral fertilization, and watering.
The plants on groups I and III were treated with music (75dB) for two hours a day five days a week for two months. I didn’t have to wait long for the results: the differences were already seen with the first tomatoes. The first observation showed that music does influence the growth of plants. The tomatoes that grew most intensely were the ones ‘listening’ to classical music. The smallest growth I observed in tomatoes where I played ‘Acid Drinkers’.
Later bad weather conditions August haste the growth of all the tomatoes and the results of observation were less noticeable.
The most difficult task was still ahead of me - the results and writing the research paper. I would like to get in touch with people who have similar observations and similar interests. I would like to compare results of my research with similar ones done by someone else.
